Yesterday was one such day, personally.
I was woken up with a call from my sis informing me that my mom's uncle had passed away. Absolutely no major reaction from me as the mama thatha was 80 years old and had fulfilled his obligations in life.
In the afternoon, I got to know that a friend's dad passed away. Called him up immediately, and he seemed pretty normal. Only I did not know what to say to him. Was very awkward. Hung up after telling him to let me know incase he needed some help. Was a slightly depressing afternoon at work yesterday due to this news.
Today morning I get an sms from the friend asking me what happened to the Champions League football matches yesterday, a sign that I think shows that he is coping up ok with the loss.

"..I did not know what to say.."
I've also faced this many a time :(
& I finally manage to say something like "Are you ok? Can I be of some help?"
You need to say nothing at all. Just listen them out if they have to say something. Else, silence is the best thing to be said. More often than not anything which we say during such times is misinterpreted.
I had to meet mama thatha's daughters in person...I didnt have anything to say....just listening to them would be enough I guess...
...your friend's father died a day back and your friend sends you a message today asking about a football match..this is the most strangest thing i have heard in recent times....
hmmm...situations like this are very tough, as few wrongly chosen words may result in diaster. Contrary to 'me,' I would suggest, 'stranger things have happened.' Finally to quote The Strokes: 'It all works out somehow in the end..'
i strongly believe that life moves on despite these losses. Yes, the ones who pass away will be missed...but the ones who are alive matter more. you couldn't have done any better...
